As promised, this is the first in a monthly collection of mixes I’ll be releasing. The idea behind this project is to compile the top 10 songs of the month. This playlists acts as a representation of my current mood, the season, how bored I am, whether I’m hungry or not, and a bunch of other really important factors. Some of these songs are brand spankin’ new, and others are oldies but goodies. Enjoy.

Those of you that know me personally, have more than likely already gotten an earful about The xx. Those of you that don’t, are about to. I have to admit that I’ve have been completely infatuated with every aspect of this band since I caught wind of them a few months back, and this post, is long overdue. From their bass heavy riffs, to the seemingly effortless vocals, everything about this band works. I think I’ve told a few people that I thought they were the future of music, and now that I reflect back on that, I realize I don’t know what the hell I meant. What I do know, is that I haven’t heard anything like this…ever…and that’s saying something. I spend probably between 20-30 hours a week researching music, and I’ve been bored out of my mind. Either it’s too much or too little, raw or over cooked, but XX (debut album by The xx) hits the nail right on the head. Now I could go into some deep analyzation of each song, and say some crap about minimalism, but I’ll spare you. They’re good. That’s all you need to know. If you disagree, to be honest I don’t care, BUT if you haven’t heard of them or any of their material, give them a listen. Check out the video for a taste.

So I’ve been pretty obsessed with music videos lately as you can tell. There’s something about putting a visual story behind a song that is just intoxicating. due to my recent increase in video viewing, I’ve become somewhat of an elitist in the field of music videos. Don’t get me wrong, this video is awesome in terms of visually stimulating images, and I’ve had a thing for this song for more than a few months now…but seriously…what is going on here. It looks to me like some sort of scenester pool party filled with shorts that are probably extremely uncomfortable, the smashing of cake and other food items in peoples faces, badass poses for pictures just because you know they’re going to end up on facebook, people deciding that it’s a good idea to jump their bikes into pools, and then a grand finale that consists super hot make out sessions just because e’re independent and e don’t care society has to say about it.

If ‘popping a glock’ means ‘lets all do a bunch of dumb crap that doesn’t make sense’, then Uffie hit the nail right on the head.

It is definitely one of the most diverse albums I’ve heard in quite sometimes, but at the same time there’s something very familiar about it’s sound and style, very Radiohead-esque. Anyways, here’s the video for one of my favorite songs on the album. Musicians should take a thing or two from the Flaming Lips when it comes to music videos, because they obviously know what they’re doing. Screw crazy camera angles, pyrotechnics, or special effects. All you need is a girl in a bikini (preferably attractive), and basic video editing knowledge.

It can be said that musical genres are much like fine wines. Actually, no it can’t, but these two seemingly different entities have one thing in common, they seem to get better as time progresses. Zounds, the sophomore album by aussie quintet Dappled Cities does nothing short of make that statement completely true in every sense of its meaning. Long gone are the days of simple guitar rifts, and three piece bands. The human ear has grown more needy, begging to be slammed by waves and waves of multi-instrumental riffs and tempo changes, and to be honest, Dappled Cities exceeds the want in the most eloquent and beautiful way possible. I’m a firm believer in the fact that every good album should be as simple as a good children’s book with a distinct and noticeable beginning middle and end, and Zounds is up for the Pulitzer. ‘Hold Your Back’ throws open the first page of our proverbial children’s book and greets your ears with a wall of electronic noise and catchy melody, leaving you in a somewhat dazed state. Luckily ‘The Price’ reaches out and catches you right before you think your about to fall out of your chair, and holds you a sound that nothing short of familiar. ‘Wooden Ships’ acts as the hook in the plot that leaves you wanting more, that unexplainable feeling of enticement that is strong enough to break even the strongest of human wills. The album progresses through another 7 songs that seem to harness almost every human emotion, finally coming to rest at the ‘Stepshadows’, which concludes our story with a somewhat happy ending while feeding the human vice of addiction, leaving you wanting more. I am genuinely excited to see what the rest of this year has to offer musically, seeing as Zounds sets the bar pretty high. I tend to consider myself a musical elitist, but this album has done the unthinkable by humbling me with its uniqueness, and I’m ok with that.
